Don’t sneer at this Bluetooth-enabled Walkman clone

In the past, I’ve been accused of trying to defend the indefensible. I once argued that Will.i.am is an underappreciated tech visionary. Earlier this year, I wrote an impassioned piece arguing the virtues of punk rock canned water. And now it’s my turn to raise an iron shield for the It’s OK – a quirkily named Bluetooth cassette player that’s currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Since the It’s OK appeared on the technosphere’s radar last week, it’s been described as “retro-nonsense,” “dumb,” and something only an insipid East London hipster would buy. The latter point might be true, actually, but…

While the radio or the music of your favorite band might seem like a solution to help screen out the noise, you might be surprised how broadcasts and even off-kilter composition can still throw you off your game. Focus@Will is created with a simple purpose: to block out interferences and keep you honed in on your assignment.

India isn’t keen on Facebook’s Libra ‘cryptocurrency’

Facebook’s new digital currency Libra has received an early jolt from the Indian government. The authorities in Asia’s third-largest economy are no more keen on the social media giant’s project than any cryptocurrency that came before it. “Design of the Facebook currency has not been fully explained,” India’s Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Garg told Bloomberg on Saturday. “But whatever it is, it would be a private cryptocurrency and that’s not something we have been comfortable with.” A virtual ban on cryptocurrency trading came into effect in India in April 2018 when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a notice…

Here’s why Satoshi Nakamoto set Bitcoin’s supply limit to 21 million

Welcome to Hard Fork Basics, a collection of tips, tricks, guides, and info to keep you up to date in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world. When Satoshi Nakamoto built Bitcoin, design choices were made that effectively limits the number of Bitcoins that will ever exist to (roughly) 21 million. A fixed supply limit certainly gives Bitcoin anti-inflationary properties, but the reason it was set to 21 million is hidden in personal correspondence between Nakamoto and software developer Mike Hearn. 21 million was making ‘educated guesses’ According to an email shared by Hearn, Nakamoto intended Bitcoin‘s unit prices to eventually align with traditional fiat…

CHEAP: Bose’s SoundSport headphones for $50? I’m sweating already

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Sometimes, you gotta pump the iron, go for a run, or just generally get a goddamn sweat on. When those (quite often) painful moments happen, there’s one thing that makes them a little better: music. Not only does it feel great listening to tunes and exercising, music can actually improve your physical performance. With this in mind, surely the better the music sounds, the better you’ll exercise, right? RIGHT? (Note: the author is not a scientist). Anyway, whether that’s true or not, we have a…
