Microsoft today announced that it was the year 1985. We checked the Microsoft store to confirm this and, as Windows 1.11 was just made available, the Redmond company’s story checks out. Here’s the message, as we received it: Microsoft and Netflix have partnered up to celebrate the release of Stranger Things third season. As we predicted (natch), the tech giant’s cryptic social media posts last week about the launch of Windows were indeed part of a Stranger Things tie-in. Introducing the all-new Windows 1.0, with MS-Dos Executive, Clock, and more!! 😲 💾 pic.twitter.com/guU4QxwsGG — Windows (@Windows) July 1, 2019 First…

Predictive policing AI is a bigger scam than psychic detectives

Law enforcement agencies around the world have recently begun extricating themselves from expensive, ineffective predictive policing systems. The machine learning equivalent of psychic detectives, it turns out, simply doesn’t work. AI can’t predict crime In Palo Alto, California a three-year long program using predictive policing is finally being shuttered. Police spokesperson Janine De la Vega told the LA Times: “We didn’t get any value out of it. It didn’t help us solve crime.” In nearby Mountain View as well, a spokesperson for the police department said “we tested the software and eventually subscribed to the service for a few years, but ultimately…

Digital Extremes, creators of the runaway hit third-person shooter Warframe, revealed this weekend that it’s running a contest to send one of its devoted players to space — well, sort of. What it’s really offering is a pretty sweet payday, but it’ll be up to the winner if that money goes towards a trip to the heavens. The company revealed the contest at Tennocon, a Warframe fan convention in Ontario. It claims to want to make someone the first “real space ninja,” using the term for the in-game Warframes. To enter the contest, you have to play the game (which is free), and…

Review: The Marshall Stockwell II speaker is louder than a Napalm Death concert

Marshall is an iconic audio brand, best known for its guitar amplifiers. But did you know that it also sells a line of Bluetooth speakers? It’s true, and they’re actually very good. I got my hands on the company’s latest venture in this area, the Marshall Stockwell II, and so far I’m really impressed. It delivers in all the key areas you care about. The Marshall Stockwell II looks just as exquisite as its amplifier brethren, which are used by professional musicians when performing live. Furthermore, it has an incredibly enduring battery, which delivers exceptional listening time when cranking out…
