Do you pine for the good old analog days when you could tell which film a photo was shot with just by looking at its colors or grain? If so, have a look at Film Emulator, a free Web app that gives you a vast variety of cool film stock-inspired options. Created in JavaScript by Jonas Wagner, the filters are based on work by Pat David, creator of G’MIC open-source software film emulators. Following the link to David’s site reveals how some Film Emulator filters map to identifiable film brands. The app’s choices don’t directly carry recognizable names, but some labels do hint at their inspiration. Overall genres…

Just yesterday, Apple consolidated their various developer programs into one cohesive unit. At first blush, it’s great for OS X and iOS developers who may want to play in each other’s sandbox now and then. Circling all the way around, we find Safari developers will have to pay the same $99 annual fee as of July 8. It might sound a bit grabby of Apple to ask for a $99 fee…

Medium is announcing Letters, a new way for writers to connect with their readers. Letters harkens back to the days of writing physical letters, but repackages them as blog posts. Medium says Letters has value “especially in today’s world of endless information streams.” When a Letter is written via Medium, it’s delivered straight to the email inboxes of your followers as well as remaining sticky on Medium. This could find favor with bloggers all over, especially if they can snag a custom domain via Medium. In announcing Letters, Medium says it will “have the potential to provide what blogs used to through RSS…

Aus dem Auto ans Netz: Mercedes-Benz Energiespeicher eignen sich auch für die private Nutzung zur verlustfreien Zwischenspeicherung von überschüssigem Strom. / From cars to power grids: Mercedes-Benz energy storages are also suitable for private use to buffer surplus power virtually free of any losses.
Looks like Tesla isn’t the only car company getting into the home battery business – Mercedes-Benz is having a go at it too. The gist is basically the same – the batteries will charge up during off-peak (read:cheaper) hours, and then use that energy to power your home when things get more expensive. They’ll also be able to store surplus charge from solar panels. Where the Daimler (which owns Mercedes-Benz) offering differs from Tesla is in customizability. The Mercedes packs come in 2.5kWh units, and you can link up to seven more for a total of 20kWh. Tesla only offers…
