Is the Switch Lite the death knell for the Nintendo 3DS?

Nintendo this week revealed the Switch Lite, a handheld-only version of the Switch with a slimmer form. Naturally, the inclusion of this new Switch into Nintendo’s stable begs the question of what place the venerable 3DS has in the new family. Is the 3DS about to exit the stage. I would say maybe… but the Switch still has a long way to go. Nintendo’s had a handheld in its stable since the original Game Boy came out in 1989. The Switch Lite would be the first time the handheld has been related to the company’s home console in anyway, even though…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. I suck at sleeping. I’ve always been one of those people who toss and turn for hours before falling into a light slumber. Then, at the sound of a pin-drop, my eyes flutter open and I’m doomed to spend another hour willing myself to fall back asleep. It’s exhausting. Luckily I’m also a technology reporter and the parent of a toddler. I’ve got a couple tips to help you snag some extra Zzz’s under even…

How to get surround sound on any headphones with Windows 10 and Xbox One

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Buying a set of surround sound speakers can be an expensive endeavor, generally requiring an A/V receiver and at least for speakers (but probably more). Alternatively, you could shell out the dough for surround sound headphones like the Audeze Mobius. But what if you want to hear surround audio with the headphones you already have? In 2017, Microsoft added support for ‘spatial sound’ in Windows 10 and on the Xbox One, opening up surround capabilities…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Despite it being almost six years old at the time of writing, the PlayStation 4 still holds some secrets from its players. Here are a few things you may have missed when using your console. Credit for some of these go to this Reddit thread, which opened with the revelation about hidden trophies that several PS4 owners (myself included) didn’t know — despite it having been introduced on the console three years ago, according to…

We gave US police, ICE, and CBP AI without regulations in 2016: Now it’s 1984

Jul12

This weekend’s ICE raids are essentially a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the government‘s surveillance state. The same AI-powered tools empowering those agents to identify, target, track, and spy on immigrants without a warrant are already in the hands of police officers, sherriff’s deputies, and border patrol agents across the country. If you’re undocumented you should be worried. And if you’re a US citizen or here legally: you should be downright terrified. US citizens are protected from unreasonable searches by the Fourth Amendment. It says our right to privacy “shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause,…
