The battle between streaming platforms is getting nasty — here’s how much it’ll cost you

If you haven’t heard, Netflix is leaking content: Friends is leaving Netflix for HBO Max, The Office is leaving Netflix for NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, and all Marvel and Star Wars content is leaving Netflix for Disney+. And this is just the tip of the iceberg… The streaming wars are about to get even more heated, with Disney, AT&T, Comcast, and Apple all set to launch their own direct-to-consumer video-on-demand services. Soon you’ll have to pick and choose between Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu (possibly bundled under Disney+), Apple TV Plus, Amazon’s Prime Video, and possibly a streaming service from…

Here’s how to mute those Instagram Story spammers

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. I’m not a huge fan of Instagram accounts posting lengthy strings of Stories each day. It clogs my feed, makes it tougher to scroll back and forth between Stories, and generally aggravates me. In fact, I hate Story spamming so much I’ve had to unfollow some of my favorite accounts. That is until I found out about ‘muting’ Stories. Here’s how to do it: Open Instagram and scroll to the Story carousel. Find the account…

I’m excited about this portable bidet because toilet paper is fucking disgusting

Every time I travel overseas, from my home base in India, I’m distressed by the thought of having to use only toilet paper to clean up below the belt. It’s gross, uncomfortable, and a lot less effective than using a bidet or a handheld water spray – the latter of which is fairly common in Indian cities, as well as in Japan. Granted, it isn’t easy to start a bidet spray revolution across the world, because that would require having new plumbing and fittings installed. But there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of Sonny, an electronic portable bidet…

End-to-end encryption systems: 9 vital elements to remember

Jul12
by Sindy Cator on July 12, 2019 at 9:00 am

End-to-end encryption is an essential technology that can keep sensitive data secure when it is being transmitted digitally. Without proper encryption, important information — including your financial records, acquisition plans or worse, your customers’ credit card data — can easily fall into the wrong hands, with devastating results. To gain some insight on the topic, I asked a panel of experts from YEC the following question: What is one thing to keep in mind when working with E2EE systems? Here is what they advise: 1. Choose a Reputable Provider “The last thing you need is malware attacks and data breaches…

Facebook now tells you where brands are getting your ad targeting data

Jul12

Facebook will now begin to show you more information about the ads you see on the social network. The tech giant has announced a series of updates to its “Why am I seeing this ad?” and Ad Preferences tools with an aim to bring users greater transparency and control. First off, the “Why am I seeing this ad?” section is about to get a lot more detailed. It will now share information about why you were targeted with a specific ad — including the interests or categories that matched you, and where that information came from, including data-brokers. You can also…
