Quotable

"Scientists have discovered that 'Thinking outside the box might be facilitated by having a somewhat less intact box', which begs the question, why are people always thinking in or around boxes? Maybe it's time we think relative to other things ... like oceans, fields, galaxies, mountains and muppets." ~ Yasha Harari

On this day fifty years ago, NASA had just began exploring the solar system as it completed its first ever flyby of Mars with the Mariner 4 spacecraft. It seems fitting that today, it has made history again by completing the first ever flyby of Pluto. YES! After over 9 years & 3+ billion miles, @NASANewHorizons #PlutoFlyby was at 7:49am ET. http://t.co/Czrvonxugd pic.twitter.com/aSucgORofT — NASA (@NASA) July 14, 2015 New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft ever to leave earth when it lifted off in 2009 and has since clocked over 3 billion miles and counting. The UK government is under pressure to adopt judicial sign-off for interception warrant requests following the publishing of a second independent report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). At the moment, ministers in the UK are allowed to give the go ahead on the surveillance warrants without judicial input. The report states that the current system of granting warrants is lacking in “legal clarity” and says the “ISR Panel believe the system requires a radical overhaul which must include an enhanced role for the judiciary.” Last month, the Anderson surveillance review came to the same conclusion. Surveillance practices in the…

Google Books is a treasure trove of interesting material but it’s just got its most incredible cache of madness: The archives of the Weekly World News. Marilyn Monroe x JFK = Tabloid gold for The Weekly World News The sensationalist supermarket tabloid was one of the strangest publications in the world, specialising in stories about aliens, human oddities and the supernatural. Toilet haunted by a plumber’s ghost – The Weekly World News It was published in print from 1979 until 2007 and lives on as a rather disappointing online-only publication. The trouble is, even a legendarily loopy newspaper can’t match the true strangeness…

With more and more engineering-focused companies trying to become design-centric, they’re no doubt trying to adopt design thinking. But it’s not as simple as saying, “Just use design thinking.” Saying it does not make it so. What exactly is “Design Thinking”? Let’s take a step back and hear from the man who helped shaped the methodology as it’s used today, Tim Brown of IDEO. As he writes: “Design thinking can be described as a discipline that uses the designer’s sensibility and methods to match people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and what a viable business strategy can convert into…
