The essential guide to talking to your customers

talking
Des Traynor is the co-founder of Intercom, the easiest way for Web and mobile businesses to understand and communicate with their customers. This is an excerpt from the book Intercom on Customer Engagement, available for free download. Sending an announcement about your product to your entire user base or email database is like writing a love letter and then addressing it “to whom it may concern”. It feels totally wrong to the recipient and no matter how compelling the body of the message is, you’ll have to fight hard to recover from that initial faux pas. It never makes sense…

Hulu considers offering ad-free service, but is there really a demand?

HULU
Netflix revealed on Thursday that it was considering a price increase and now it looks like its rival, Hulu, wants to do the same. According to The WSJ, the streaming service has codenamed its project NOAH (No Ads on Hulu) and it would see it offer an additional ad-free tier for $12 – $14 per month. At the moment, Hulu customers pay $7.99 per month and still have to endure ad breaks. It’s not a done deal yet and I struggle to see its appeal for current Hulu customers. For the company, it shows that it’s taking itself seriously among its…

Casey Neistat’s social iPhone app tries to stop you being fake on social media

Screen Shot 2015-07-17 at 3.02.22 PM
Casey Neistat, a YouTuber with over 800,000 subscribers, has released his first iPhone app that’s a sort of anti-social network. Announced today via his YouTube channel, Beme is a video sharing social network with a catch: it won’t allow you to shoot any video unless you cover the screen. The idea is to try and kill the “fake” image that people portray on social media by forcing people to just capture the moment without staring at their screen and interrupting the moment. To take a video, the proximity sensor above the screen must be covered. Neistat demonstrates in his announcement video by holding…

This startup has quietly made 1,000,000 email receipts actually useful

Practically every time you buy something online, you get an email receipt. That’s handy for keeping track of your spending or quickly sorting our work expenses, but the actual text is rarely useful in itself. Receiptful is a startup that’s been quietly working away to change that. It began in November 2014 and, as of this week, has sent over 1 million receipts using its API. The point is to add extra value to those communications for buyers and sellers. That includes things like delivering discounts, showing recommendations and adding referral incentives so you tell a friend. Last year, Jack Dorsey…

Windows 10 will force you to update and that’s good news

Surface 3-22
Windows 10, which is due out on July 29, has a tiny change you might want to know about: it automatically updates whether you want it to or not. Spotted by The Register, a change in the licensing agreement for Windows 10 says that if you accept the terms you’ll receive automatic updates without any notice: The Software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. You may obtain updates only from Microsoft or authorised sources, and Microsoft may need to update your system to provide you with those updates. By accepting this agreement, you agree…
