failure
Put thought into a losing strategy (yes, really!) and chart a healthier path toward your goals as a designer. A common scenario: your principle-worshipping, functionally beautiful, weeks-in-the-making, slaved-over responsive Web design, is, well, panned. Your superiors whisper about a complete overhaul, and you can’t help but wonder if their comments are tinged with the slightest suggestion of second thoughts as to their hiring decision. Deadlines loom, there’s HTML to write, and browser testing to perform. You gave it a shot and struck out. Now what? As you grapple with the situation, consider Babe Ruth. True, he has become the somewhat…

Each week we’re profiling one company that has been selected for Boost – our early-stage startup growth program. Catch up with these companies in person at The Next Web Conference in New York on November 18. Taking event technology in a different direction, SponsorMyEvent aims to tackle the issue of sponsors not being able to find suitable events, and event organizers not being able to get the attention of sponsors. Acting as a marketplace, it matches event planners with prospective sponsors. Not many events could happen without sponsorship money, and although SponsorMyEvent isn’t the first company to offer a sponsorship directory…

drone rescue
Drones, man. It’s all drones. One day, the drones will enslave us. But in the meantime, let’s gorge ourselves on delicious meme goodness. Today’s enticing morsel: A guy saving a previously lost drone with its replacement. The story as told by the YouTube user Harrisen Howes is this: Two Months ago my roommate drunkenly lost my small drone on a neighbors roof. Two months later after upgrading to a larger drone I attempted a rescue of the smaller drone using hooks I made from coat hangers. Here is the result. The usual caveats apply. I can’t prove this clip wasn’t purely set…

Google search results sometimes include a tiny message at the bottom that some sites have been removed for sharing pirated content. Those requests come from movie studios and other content rights holders who manually submit links to be taken down. What’s pretty hilarious is movie studios have been submitting takedown requests that include links to pirated content stored on their own desktop computers. Here’s Universal Pictures France asking Google to take down files for Jurassic World hosted at ‘http://127.0.0.1′ — which is the system’s ‘localhost’ address — where a BitTorrent client appears to be running: NBC Universal asked Google to take down a lot of links…

Google’s Mongolian Street View driver has the coolest job in the world: driving around the country in a 4×4, documenting its beautiful national parks and cities. Sometimes it gets even cooler, like when they jump on a horse and ride around a frozen lake filled with giant ice sculptures. Where do I sign up? Every year, visitors come from distant locations to visit the frozen Khuvsgul Lake and its Ice Festival held right on top of its frozen surface. On display are enormous ice sculptures, ice-related sports, an enormous flea market and horse riding — even bonfires are held directly on the ice. Khuvsgul is the…
