It’s official. Google has ended its quest to re-enter China with a modified search engine. The company‘s VP of public policy, Karan Bhatia, told the US Senate earlier this week that it has abandoned Project Dragonfly.  The search giant has “no current plans” to go to China, he added. Google’s Bhatia, questioned by Sen. Hawley, says, “We have terminated Project Dragonfly.” Then back to the party line: Google has “no current plans” to go to China. Israeli hacker allegedly stole $1.7M in cryptocurrency from Europeans

A cybercriminal from Israel is facing a long list of felonies associated with the supposed theft of $1.7 million (6.1 million NIS) in various cryptocurrencies. The perp, 31-year old Eliyahu Gigi from Tel Aviv, reportedly stole Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dash from various foreigners, including Belgians, Dutch, and Germans, Israeli news reports. Gigi is facing charges of theft, fraud, aggravated counterfeiting, use of a forged document, perjury, money laundering, and income tax offenses. According to the report, Gigi had been operating a “criminal enterprise” spanning a number of websites that allowed him to conduct his criminal activity and swindle his victims…

Instagram is hiding likes in 6 more countries so you can post like no one’s watching

In an effort to remove the pressure of posting content, Instagram is doubling down on its experiment to hide certain social media metrics in select regions. In an announcement on Twitter, the company said it is running a test that “hides the total number of likes and video views for some people” in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and New Zealand. So in case you’re having trouble tracking your frenemies’ social media engagement on Instagram, this is probably the reason why. The experimental layout is identical to the standard one, with the minor distinction that you will only see the usernames…
