We shouldn’t colonize Mars without knowing if aliens were there before us

Transforming the red planet to support life has long been a dream of science fiction. Mars is now too cold to support life. Its atmosphere is also too thin to protect any living organisms from harmful radiation. But a new study suggests that local conditions could be changed using an inch of “aerogel” – a synthetic and ultralight material made by taking a gel and replacing the liquid component with a gas. The authors behind the paper, published in Nature Astronomy, claim the technique could produce habitable regions on the red planet and potentially allow life to develop and thrive…

How to build Reddit custom feeds (also known as ‘multis’) like a pro

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Before I became a journalist, Reddit was my preferred source of information and entertainment. I didn’t use Twitter, I hardly got on Facebook, and I absolutely despised Snapchat. Then I started using it for work, and I suddenly couldn’t enjoy it in my spare time anymore. It felt like two universes colliding. Until I discovered custom feeds (also known as multis). With multis, you can build up custom lists of subreddits that won’t meddle with the content…

Instagram will kindly let you know you’ve F’ed up before banning you

Instagram has just introduced a new policy that’ll notify you if your account is at risk of getting banned. The social network will let you know if it finds one of your posts problematic, and even offer a chance to appeal the ban. The company said appeals will be available for posts that are removed under violation of nudity and pornography, bullying and harassment, hate speech, drug sales, and counter-terrorism policies. But it’ll expand the category list in coming months.  Instagram’s been involved in plenty of controversies when it banned content from Rihanna and other celebrities as a violation of its nudity policy.…

NSO Group’s Whatsapp spyware can now snoop on your Facebook, Google and iCloud data too

The Israeli company behind WhatsApp hack earlier this May has developed new technology that can clandestinely steal a user’s data from Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft. According to The Financial Times — which reported the development — NSO Group’s Pegasus malware “has now evolved to capture the much greater trove of information stored beyond the phone in the cloud, such as a full history of a target’s location data, archived messages or photo.” Upon installation on the target’s phone, the new capability works by copying the login credentials of various services like Facebook Messenger, Google Cloud, iCloud, and others,…

How scientists could one day predict your memories

Jul19
by Sindy Cator on July 19, 2019 at 9:01 am
Posted In: Around the Web, syndication

Do you remember your first kiss? What about your grandma dying? Chances are you do, and that’s because emotional memories are at the core of our personal life story. Some rare moments are just incredibly intense and stand out from an otherwise repetitive existence of sleeping, eating and working. That said, daily life, too, is replete with experiences that have a personal emotional significance – such as disagreeing with someone or receiving a compliment. Most of us are able to describe emotional memories in some detail, even after a long time, while memories of more mundane experiences and events fade…
