European police trial sending young hackers to remedial classes instead of jail

European authorities are mulling over the idea of giving a second chance to young hackers instead of sending them straight to the clink – but only if they haven’t previously engaged in cybercrime. At the International Conference on Cybersecurity held at Fordham University, officials explained UK and Dutch police have been running a legal intervention campaign aimed at first-time offenders between the ages of 12 and 23 who broke the law without realizing it, CyberScoop reports. Since kicking off the program in 2018, UK police has had interactions with over 400 hackers who fit the bill, the officials added. “We…

Review: The Anker Soundcore Wakey is a perfect, slightly overpowered alarm clock

Jul24

As someone who is decidedly not a morning person, I had aspersions about reviewing the Anker Soundcore Wakey. After all, if audiophiles review headphones, and die-hard gamers review games, what business do I, a person whose snooze button has rubbed away into naught, have reviewing a high-tech alarm clock? I thought about that, and then I said to Anker’s PR person: “Ah, sod it. Send it over.” As it turns out, that was a good shout. Not only is the Anker Soundcore Wakey a genuinely delightful bit of kit, it’s also one of the best alarm clocks I’ve ever had…

Criminals made a staggering 52.7 million cryptojacking hits during the first six months of the year. According to the latest research from SonicWall, cryptojacking activity rose by 9 percent between January and June 2019 when compared to levels seen in the last six months of 2018. Cryptojacking refers to when a user’s computing power is hijacked by malware to mine cryptocurrency, which is often triggered by code hidden in websites. The research also looked into the correlation between Bitcoin‘s price and criminal activity. The graph above shows that cryptojacking volumes began declining in November and December seemingly mirroring Bitcoin‘s declining…

Apple denies favoring its own apps in App Store search results

Apple’s App Store is already a point of antitrust contention, and a new investigation by The Wall Street Journal has revealed that the company’s own mobile apps are often first in App Store search results ahead of competitors. “The company’s apps ranked first in more than 60 percent of basic searches, such as for ‘maps.’ Apple apps that generate revenue through subscriptions or sales, like Music or Books, showed up first in 95 percent of searches related to those apps,” the report said. In categories like books and maps, Apple’s equivalent offerings are less popular than those from Amazon and…
