The thought of a Spotify and SoundCloud marriage filled us with butterflies when we first reported it back in September. The two were said to be in “advanced talks” over an acquisition. Since then, we’ve met with radio silence. According to a TechCrunch source, it seems the relationship has soured and Spotify recently backed out of the deal. The source told TechCrunch Spotify got cold feet after fearing the acquisition could negatively impact IPO plans, saying “it doesn’t need an additional licensing headache in a potential IPO year.” The complexity mentioned would come from SoundCloud.
