The artwork features “Lucy,” a 3-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis fossil discovered at the Hadar research site in Ethiopia. The discovery happened in 1974 and its impact on the study of evolution can’t be overstated. Since that time, we’ve discovered more than 20 different hominid species, including as many as eight in Lucy’s genus, Australopithecus.
