SoundCloud will soon introduce streaming limits outside of its network. Starting July 1, any track hosted on the service will be limited to 15,000 streams in a 24 hour period.

The limitation won’t affect tracks played directly on Soundcloud — only those played via a third-party app that uses SoundCloud’s API. To enforce the new playback rule, SoundCloud is instituting a 15,000 play request limit on their API.

SoundCloud says it’s “dealing with an increasing number of applications that abuse creator content” and thinks the API limit will help.

It’s an interesting move for SoundCloud, which is facing incoming fire from Apple Music, which has a feature called ‘Connect’ that is similar to SoundCloud’s upload feature.

Note: This report was altered to clarify that embeds are seemingly not affected by this news. We have contacted SoundCloud for clarification on the scope of the limit.
