iMessage is down for some users

Twitter is buzzing with news that iMessage is down for some users. The outage seems unrelated to Apple’s update to iOS 8 today. I currently can not send an iMessage message via OS X and on the ¡Phone, it reverts to text messaging to send messages that have failed to send. Neither of our test iPhones that are unable to use iMessage have updated to iOS 8.1.1.
